Where to surf on the Opal Coast: spots, seasons and surf schools

In short
On the Côte d'Opale (Opal Coast), the surf is best from autumn to spring, when westerly and north-westerly swells push into the Channel. Le Touquet, Berck and Fort-Mahon suit beginners with their long sandy beaches; Wimereux, the Pointe aux Oies and the Cap Gris-Nez area have hollower waves for experienced surfers.
Yes, you can surf in northern France: the Côte d'Opale picks up Atlantic swells filtered through the Channel, and on days when the swell direction is right, its beaches have proper waves. To learn, Le Touquet is one of the most accessible spots in the region, with a school right on the beach; to progress, head north to Wimereux and Cap Gris-Nez. Here's how to read the conditions and choose your spot.
How the waves work on the Opal Coast
The coastline between the baie de Somme and Calais faces west and north-west. Waves are generated by Atlantic and North Sea low-pressure systems; they are generally shorter and less powerful than on the Basque coast, but they break over very even sandy bottoms, perfect for learning. Three factors make all the difference:
- The swell: the best days come from a west to north-west swell. A sea churned up by a strong south-westerly often becomes surfable just afterwards, when the wind drops.
- The wind: offshore wind (east, south-east) cleans up the waves; onshore wind makes them messy.
- The tide: the tidal range exceeds 6 metres on spring tides. Each spot has its “right” tide, and a beach can change completely in two hours.
The most consistent season runs from September to April. Summer mostly brings small waves, ideal for lessons but rarely for experienced surfers.
Surf spots, from south to north
| Spot | Type | Level | Journey from Le Touquet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fort-Mahon-Plage | Long sandy beach | Beginner | approx. 40 min |
| Berck-sur-Mer | Sandy beach | Beginner | approx. 25 min |
| Le Touquet-Paris-Plage | Beach break, lefts and rights | All levels | on the spot |
| Hardelot | Sandy beach | Beginner to intermediate | approx. 30 min |
| Wimereux | Beach, sea wall at high tide | Intermediate | approx. 40 min |
| Pointe aux Oies (north Wimereux) | Rocky bottom | Intermediate to advanced | approx. 45 min |
| Cap Gris-Nez area, Wissant | Beaches and rocky points | Varies by spot | approx. 50 min |
The south: big beaches for learning
From Fort-Mahon to Le Touquet, the coast is a string of huge, flat beaches. Waves break far from the shore and lose their power gradually: ideal terrain for standing up on a foam board. Le Touquet's spot works at all stages of the tide, with peaks breaking both left and right.
The north: punchier waves
Between Boulogne and Calais, the coastline becomes more rugged. In Wimereux, watch out at high tide: the waves then hit the sea wall, a trap for beginners. The Pointe aux Oies, just to the north, is a rocky reef that works mainly on a falling tide and can create currents when the wind blows. Many local surfers consider the Cap Gris-Nez area the best on the French side of the Channel on good swell days; on a clear day you can see the English cliffs. Wissant, better known for kitesurfing and windsurfing, also offers surf sessions in winter.

Learning to surf in Le Touquet
The Côte d'Opale Surfing school is based at the Centre nautique de la Manche Bertrand Lambert, at the southern end of the main beach. It welcomes children from age 7 as well as adults:
- Group lessons of 1 hr 30, equipment (board and wetsuit), insurance and a qualified instructor included.
- Courses of 3 or 5 lessons during the spring, summer and autumn holidays.
- Rental of surfboards, paddleboards, bodyboards and skimboards for independent surfers.
- Back-up activities depending on the weather: paddleboarding on flat days, bodyboarding or skimboarding when the waves are too small.
Book directly with the school (official website). The same sailing centre also offers land yachting and kitesurfing: see our guide to watersports in Le Touquet.
Charles's tip: for a first lesson, aim for a day with light wind and a modest swell rather than a “big” day. And book the morning slot: the sea is often smoother before the afternoon sea breeze picks up.
Wetsuits and safety: what to wear by season
The water in the Channel stays cool: around 15 to 20 °C in summer and 5 to 10 °C in winter. Your gear makes the difference between an enjoyable session and heading back in after twenty minutes.
| Period | Water temperature | Recommended gear |
|---|---|---|
| July - September | around 15 to 20 °C | 3/2 mm full wetsuit |
| April - June, October | cool | 4/3 mm wetsuit, boots |
| November - March | around 5 to 10 °C | 5/4 mm, hood, gloves and boots |
On safety: surf near other people, spot rip currents and channels before going in, respect the lifeguarded swimming zones in summer and always check the tide times. Channel waves are more modest than in the Atlantic, but tidal currents can be strong, especially near rocky points.

Reading a forecast before you go
Before driving up the coast, take five minutes to cross-check three pieces of information. A swell forecast site gives the height, period and direction of the waves; a weather site gives the wind; the tourist office or the SHOM (the French hydrographic service) gives tide times. What to look for:
- A period of at least 7 to 8 seconds: below that, waves are short and choppy, typical of a wind sea; above that, they arrive in cleaner lines.
- Light or offshore wind (east to south-east on most spots): this is what makes waves hollow and clean.
- The right tide window: a falling tide for the Pointe aux Oies, avoid high water in Wimereux, almost any time in Le Touquet.
In practice, the best sessions often come the day after a south-westerly blow, when the swell is still there but the wind has dropped or swung round to the east. Once there, take time to watch a few sets from the beach and see where local surfers are sitting: it's the best indicator of the day's currents and sandbanks. Finally, respect the rules of priority: the wave belongs to the surfer closest to the peak, and you don't paddle through the zone where others are catching waves.
Planning a surf weekend from Le Touquet
Le Touquet is a practical base: learn on the spot, then head up to Wimereux or Cap Gris-Nez when conditions are right, less than an hour's drive away. A sample weekend:
- Saturday morning: a lesson or session in Le Touquet, on a rising tide.
- Saturday afternoon: a walk in the dunes or the forest, then dinner in town.
- Sunday: if the swell direction is right, head for Wimereux and the Pointe aux Oies; if not, paddleboarding in the baie de Canche.
From Villa Mon Étoile, the beach is about 5 minutes' walk, handy for fitting in two sessions a day. For the best time to visit, see our article on the weather in Le Touquet, and to compare the two bases in the north and south of the coast, our article Wissant or Le Touquet.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really surf on the Opal Coast?
Yes. The coast picks up westerly and north-westerly swells, mainly from September to April. The waves are smaller than in the Atlantic, which makes it a very good place to learn.
What is the best surf spot for beginners on the Opal Coast?
Le Touquet is one of the most accessible: a long sandy beach, waves that break at all stages of the tide and a surf school based at the Bertrand Lambert sailing centre.
What wetsuit do I need to surf in northern France?
A 3/2 mm is enough in high summer. In spring and autumn, take a 4/3 with boots, and in winter a 5/4 with a hood, gloves and boots.
From what age can children take surf lessons in Le Touquet?
The Côte d'Opale Surfing school welcomes children from age 7, in 1 hr 30 group lessons or on courses during the holidays.
