Wissant or Le Touquet: a Village Between Two Capes or a Full-Scale Resort?

In short
Choose Wissant for a village of fewer than 1,000 people set between Cap Gris-Nez and Cap Blanc-Nez, ideal for surfing, kitesurfing and hiking. Go for Le Touquet for a full-scale resort, with more than 12 km of beach, a forest, three golf courses and shops open all year round. The two are about 50 minutes' drive apart.
Wissant or Le Touquet? The question often comes up among those torn between wild nature and the comforts of a proper resort. Wissant is a small Opal Coast village nestled in a bay between two capes; Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is a seaside town built around its forest and its long beach. Here is what really sets them apart, with a comparison table and our advice depending on your profile.

Scenery: the Two Capes bay versus the dune coast
Wissant enjoys a rare position: the beach curves in an arc between Cap Gris-Nez to the south-west, the point on the French coast closest to England, and Cap Blanc-Nez to the north-east, whose chalk cliffs rise above 130 m. On a clear day, you can see the English coast some thirty kilometres away. The Châtelet dunes and the Tardinghen marsh complete a very unspoilt setting, protected under several designations.
Le Touquet plays in a different register: a flat, straight coastline, dunes and, above all, a pine forest of about 800 hectares in which the town was built. To the north, the Pointe du Touquet opens onto the Canche bay, a national nature reserve where you can watch birds and seals. If you like walking in the shade of the pines or cycling through the forest, Le Touquet has the edge; if you dream of cliffs and sweeping panoramas, it's Wissant.
Board sports: Wissant, the go-to spot in northern France
Wissant is one of the main surf spots in northern France, and its bay is very popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers, who make the most of the Channel winds. Conditions vary a lot with the tide and wind direction: check with the local schools before going in, as the currents can be strong.
In Le Touquet, the long beach, flat and firm at low tide, is above all the realm of sand yachting, with kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding too, depending on conditions. To compare spots, read our guides to surfing on the Opal Coast and kitesurfing on the Opal Coast.
- Surfers: Wissant has the edge.
- Kitesurfing and windsurfing: both, with a stronger reputation for Wissant.
- Sand yachting and family outings: Le Touquet has the edge.

Heritage and traditions
Wissant, a village of fishermen and painters
Wissant is the village of the flobarts, flat-bottomed fishing boats that were hauled up onto the beach for lack of a harbour. Every year at the end of August, the Fête du flobart pays tribute to this tradition. The village also attracted artists: from 1889 until the Second World War, a painters' colony, the Wissant school, formed around the couple Adrien Demont and Virginie Demont-Breton, who lived at the Typhonium, a striking neo-Egyptian villa from 1891 that is listed as a historic monument.
Le Touquet, a Roaring Twenties resort
Le Touquet tells a different story: that of a resort created in 1882 in the middle of the dunes, which became a town in 1912 and then a favourite holiday destination for British visitors. Its Anglo-Norman, Art Deco and modernist villas, its hotels and its sports facilities bear witness to this. To find out more: the history of Le Touquet.
Amenities, accommodation and day-to-day life
This is often the deciding factor. Wissant is a village: a few shops, restaurants and places to stay, but a more limited offer, especially out of season. People come for the peace and the nature, accepting that they will need the car for big shopping trips or outings.
Le Touquet works like a small town: a covered market, shops on rue Saint-Jean, restaurants, a cinema, a riding centre, golf and a conference and events centre (the Palais des Congrès). The resort stays lively for much of the year, making it a good option for an off-season stay or a long winter weekend.
Worth knowing: Wissant faces severe erosion of its beach and dunes. The sea wall has been damaged several times in recent decades, and the village is classified among those exposed to coastal retreat. This doesn't stop you enjoying it, but some beach access points may change after storms.

What to see around each resort
Your choice of base also depends on what you want to visit in the area. Approximate driving times:
| From Wissant | Time | From Le Touquet | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cap Blanc-Nez | 10 min | Étaples-sur-Mer | 10 min |
| Cap Gris-Nez | 15–20 min | Berck-sur-Mer and the Authie bay | 25 min |
| Wimereux and Ambleteuse | 20 min | Montreuil-sur-Mer | 25 min |
| Calais | 20 min | Boulogne-sur-Mer and Nausicaá | 35 min |
| Boulogne-sur-Mer and Nausicaá | 20–25 min | Bay of Somme (Le Crotoy) | 45 min |
Wissant is therefore the ideal base for exploring the northern Opal Coast, from Calais to Boulogne. Le Touquet, more central, lets you head out both towards the Two Capes and towards the Bay of Somme, making it a better choice for a week-long stay. All our ideas for outings are in day trips from Le Touquet.
So, Wissant or Le Touquet?
Our verdict depending on your profile:
- Surfer, kitesurfer, hiker: Wissant, at the heart of the Grand Site des Deux-Caps.
- Family with children: Le Touquet, for its beach usable at any tide, its cycle paths and its activities. Our ideas are gathered in Le Touquet with the family.
- Couple seeking total peace and quiet: Wissant, especially out of season.
- A week-long stay with a taste for variety: Le Touquet as your base, with a day in Wissant and at the capes.
The best solution is often to combine the two: the 50 minutes between them are easy to cover in a day. For a week in Le Touquet with outings all along the coast, the Villa Mon Étoile apartments, 300 m from the beach, sleep up to 8 people when Hélios and Cassiopée are booked together.
Charles's tip: for a day in Wissant from Le Touquet, park in Wissant, set off on foot in the morning towards Cap Gris-Nez along the beach or the coastal path, come back to the village for lunch, then drive to Cap Blanc-Nez in the late afternoon, when the low sunlight makes the white cliffs stand out.
