Which beach is closest to Lille?
Good news if you live in or are visiting Lille: the sea is never far. The nearest coast is around Dunkirk and the Belgian border; further south, the Opal Coast takes a little longer. Rough figures from central Lille, without traffic:
| Beach | By car | By train |
|---|---|---|
| Malo-les-Bains (Dunkirk) | about 80 km, 1 hour (A25) | TER Lille to Dunkirk, about 30 min to 1 hour |
| Bray-Dunes / De Panne (Belgium) | about 75 to 95 km, 1 h 10 | less convenient, with a change |
| Wimereux | about 125 to 140 km, 1 h 30 | TER with a change, 1 h 30 to 2 hours |
| Le Touquet-Paris-Plage | about 170 km, 2 hours (A25 then A16) | TER to Étaples-Le Touquet, 1 h 15 to 2 hours |
For a spur-of-the-moment swim on a Sunday afternoon, Malo-les-Bains is hard to beat: a long promenade, fine sand and a direct train. De Panne, just over the border, is also very close. Le Touquet takes a bit more effort, which is exactly why it works better as a short break than as a day trip.
Why go the extra distance to Le Touquet
- A change of scene: a seaside resort set among pine trees, with old villas, tree-lined avenues and a lively shopping street.
- A very wide beach at low tide, and the Canche estuary close by for birdwatching or quiet walks.
- The forest and its cycle paths, the golf courses, the riding centre: plenty of ways to vary your days, even under grey skies.
- A base for exploring the Opal Coast: headlands, the Authie bay, Montreuil-sur-Mer. See things to do around Le Touquet.
